Canine Health Research Grants

The CKC Foundation provides research funding to scientists investigating the causes, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in dogs. Apply for an organization conducting a canine health research project of your Club's choice and if approved, the CKC Foundation will fund it!

Pawsitivity Grants

If your Club has an innovative community project aimed at enhancing or highlighting the many benefits dogs bring to their humans, we want to hear about it! Our Pawsitivity Grants can support a range of community projects run by partnering charities and not-for-profit organizations.

Questions & Answers

Who is eligible to submit an application?
Any CKC-recognized club may apply for these grants.

How much is being disbursed in total?
The CKC Foundation will award a total of $20,000 in grants to CKC-recognized clubs.

How much money can each club apply for?
Grants for health research projects are up to $1,000. Grants for community-based Pawsitivity projects are up to $500.

Once a project application is approved, when will funds be dispersed?
Community-based Pawsitivity projects - Funding amount awarded will be dispersed one week prior to the project start date.
Health research projects - If the research project has already commenced, funds will be dispersed within a week of the approval of the application. If the project has not started, then funding will be dispersed one week prior to the confirmed commencement of the project.

How does my club apply?
An application form will be available shortly.

What is the deadline to apply for a grant?
The CKC Foundation is planning three waves of application-intakes. Those application-intake dates may change but for now, we are planning for early February, late March, and mid-May.

What is the time frame for the completion of a funded project?
Yes, community-based Pawsitivity projects will have a maximum expected completion time of six months, while health research projects will have a maximum expected completion time of 18 months.

What is the definition of an eligible health research project?
Any research by scientists investigating the causes, diagnosis and treatments of diseases in dogs. The entity must either be a registered charity or a University. Here is a list of universities outside of Canada registered as qualified donees.

What are everyone's roles for a health research project grant?
The club would be the "sponsor" of the grant. The funds would be disbursed directly to the research entity on behalf of the club with a successful application. The CKC Foundation would disburse the funds at the appropriate time based on research timeline and would require a periodical report of their findings.

What is the definition of an eligible community-based Pawsitivity project?
Any project that focusses on improving the canine-human relationship, is run locally and within Canada. Examples include but aren't limited to educating communities on responsible dog-ownership and training dogs to perform functions that are useful to humans such as service or emotional support dogs.

Will the CKC Foundation continue to fund these projects after 2020?
This will depend on how efficiently and effectively the clubs use their grant monies and what results they achieve. At the end of the year, the results will be assessed and decisions made at that time whether to continue the program or not.

Why are the grants limited to $1,000 for health research projects and $500 for community-based Pawsitivity projects?
We recognize these grant amounts will not be enough to significantly develop health research projects by themselves and while many community-based projects may be completed effectively with this funding, some may not. The funding is designed to jump-start a project or help one already in place that could use extra funding, and not to be the main sponsor but rather a partner with your club's endeavours. As well, the CKC Foundation would like to help as many clubs as possible throughout the country and have the monies go to a variety of different types of clubs.

Can a single club apply for both a health research grant and a community-based Pawsitivity grant?
No. A single club may only apply for one of the two.
